Mongo Schory Defends Title at the
2002 Ford U.X. Open Championship

CHEWELAH, WA, SEPT. 28, 2002 -- Peter "Mongo" Schory -- an avalanche forecaster from Chewelah, WA. -- successfully defended his Ford U.X. Open "extreme golf" title against six challengers by winning back-to-back chips-offs on the final two holes today (Sept. 28) at 49 Degrees North in Chewelah, WA. at the 2002 Ford U.X. Open Championship.

It was a scene reminiscent of last year when Schory upended defending champion Jim Ryan in a final hole chip-off. This year, his accomplishment was even more impressive as the 6-handicap player defeated a field that included four golf professionals. Two of those pro's -- Ric Moore of Bakersfield, CA and Jason Pitt of Chewelah Country Club -- fell to Schory in the sudden death chip-offs on the final two holes.

The Ford U.X. Open is golf with no boundaries, leaving the manicured fairways, rigid dress codes, extensive rules and high costs at the country club. It offers golfers a whole new challenge up, down, and across a mountain course. Instead of putting, players must pitch the ball onto a painted circle 20-30 feet in diameter. The Championship round featured a unique survivor-style shootout with the player with the highest score eliminated on each hole until a champion is left standing. If two players share the high-score, a one shot closest-to-the-pin chip-off determines who is eliminated.

Here's the order of finish for the 2002 Ford U.X. Open: Champion Peter "Mongo" Schory (age 53, avalanche forecaster, Chewelah, WA); Jason Pitt (age 24, Spokane, WA. Asst. Golf Pro Chewelah, Country Club); Ric Moore (age 41, Bakersfield, CA. golf pro Bakersfield Country Club); Bill Davis (age 41, Spanish Teacher, St. Augustine H.S. in San Diego); Dennis Hurlburt (age 51, Mammoth Lakes, CA, golf pro/snowboard instructor); Adam Kokinda (age 32, Las Vegas, NV, Help Reforest America); and Julie Rivers (age 35, Jackson, NH, head golf pro, Eagle Mountain Golf Club).

A one-hour highlight show of the 2002 Ford U.X. Open Championship will be televised on Oct. 21 on The Golf Channel. The winner receives a crystal trophy, a set of Top Flite irons, the famed U.X. Open crushed red velvet championship jacket and an invitation to the 2003 Ford U.X. Open Championship tourney to defend the title.

The 2002 Tour included three qualifying events: Aug. 3 -- Mammoth Mountain (California); Aug. 10 -- 49º North (Washington); and Aug. 24 -- Wildcat Mountain Ski Area (New Hampshire). The top two players at each event, plus Mr. Schory, advanced to the 2002 Ford U.X. Open Championship.

The U.X. Open Tour is sponsored by Ford. "U.X. Open" and "X" and "mountain" designs are service marks of UXGA Tour Properties, LLC., Fairfield, CT. Golf Digest is the official magazine of the 2002 Ford U.X. Open.
