An Extremely Memorable Weekend for
2003 U.X. Open Champion Ed Galvan
Burbank Golf Pro Gets Engaged & Defeats Old Friend for Title

ASPEN, CO., SEP. 21, 2003 - For Ed Galvan of Burbank, CA, it was an extremely successful weekend. The 44-year-old golf pro from De Bell Golf Club defeated eight other extreme golfers, including the two-time defending champion as well as his college roommate, to claim the 2003 U.X. Open Championship at Snowmass Mountain in Aspen on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003.

To make the weekend even more memorable, Galvan took advantage of the mountain getaway weekend to "pop the question" and get engaged to long-time girlfriend Pam Chandler at Mesa Verde National Forest on the scenic drive from Burbank to Aspen.

The win also gave Galvan a chance to turn the tables on long-time friend and rival Ric Moore, head golf pro at Bakersfield Country Club. Although the Snowmass Mountain may have been one of the more extreme locations for a Galvan-Moore showdown, it was by no means the first time they have shared a round of golf. Galvan and Moore were teammates at Alhambra Hight School (1978) and on the (1981) East Los Angeles Junior College State Championship team. Since then, they have played against each other in hundreds of professional tourneys.

"I'm exhausted but happy," said a victorious Galvan after slipping on the U.X. Open red velvet championship jacket and hoisting up the granite trophy. "Ric has beat me more times that I'd like to remember so it's even more sweet that it came down to us as the final two. It's special that both Pam and Ric were part of this weekend."

The longest course in U.X. Open history, with an average length of 550 yards per hole, was perfectly suited for Galvan's power game. He won the tourney on the 1,220 yard finishing hole when he boomed a 4-wood over 340 yards to just 8-feet from the hole. Galvan chipped into the circle to defeat Moore, the third place finished in 2002., who could not hole out from 125 yards out. The four clubs Galvan used were a driver, 4-wood, 6-iron and 9-iron.

The game's most successful "extreme golfer" two-time defending champion Peter "Mongo" Schory, an avalanche forecaster from Chewelah, WA, finished fifth, but it took miraculous shots from Galvan and fourth place finisher Keith Woodward on the fifth hole to avoid a chip-off and eliminate Schory.

Here is the order of finish of the 2003 U.X. Open. 1. Ed Galvan (age 44, Golf Pro, Burbank, CA); 2. Ric Moore (age 42, Golf Pro, Bakersfield, CA); 3. Ben Johnson (age 25, Sales, Clifton Park, NY); 4. Keith Woodward (age 52, Nordic Groomer, East Corinth, VT); 5. Peter "Mongo" Schory (age 54, Avalanche Forecaster Chewelah, WA); 6. Brion After (age 31, Store Manager, Aspen, CO); 7. Gregg Lippincott (age 56, CPA, Bishop, CA); 8. Ernie Salo (age 49, Construction, Bondville, VT); 9. Julie Rivers (age 38, Golf Pro, Intervale, NH)

U.X. Open golf leaves the manicured fairways, dress codes, rules and costs at the country club and offers an extreme challenge … up, down, and across a 10-hole mountain course, with 10 rules catering to the rocky terrain. Instead of putting, participants pitch the ball onto a painted 20-30 foot circle; a four-club limit; less severe penalties for lost balls and unplayable lies; and no dress code … although hiking boots are strongly recommended and ski lifts are the preferred mode of transport.

The 2003 U.X. Open tour included qualifying events on: Aug. 2 -- Mammoth Mountain (Mammoth Lakes, CA); Aug. 9 - Bromley Mountain (Manchester, VT); Aug. 16 -- Wildcat Mountain (Jackson, NH); Sep. 20 - Snowmass Mountain (Aspen, CO). Past champions include: 1999 Kevin Cahill of Berwyn, PA; 2000; Jim Ryan of Rochester, NY; 2001 & 2002; Peter "Mongo" Schory of Chewelah, WA.
