Adventurous Golfers Climb New Heights as the
2003 U.X. Open™ Comes To Bromley Mountain
Golf Tour Challenges Players With Rugged Mountain Terrain

MANCHESTER, VT., AUG. 10, 2003 - Nearly 50 adventurous golfers took on the rugged challenge of Bromley Mountain in Manchester, VT on Aug. 9 in the 2003 U.X. Open on a wet, rainy and just plain extreme day. After several hours of playing up, down and around the mountain golf course, Ben Johnson of Clifton Park, NY and Ernie Salo of Bondville, VT survived to advance to the 2003 U.X. Open Finals in Aspen, CO. on September 21.

Although several New England area mountains have hosted tourneys, this marked the first tour event in the state of Vermont. The 26-year old Johnson shot a (+1) 36 to edge Salo (+3) and third place finisher Gregor Gieras (+3) from Cambridge, MA by two shots. But in the chip-off Salo stuck his shot closer than Gieras to advance to earn the spot in the finals. After the finals, Gieras made plans to try again, next week (Aug. 16) at Wildcat Mountain in Jackson, NH.

"UX Open is fun and different. It is physically demanding yet kind of relaxing. It is hard to be uptight when you have gorgeous views from the top of a ski mountain in the summertime," admits, Johnson, who grew up in Dalton, MA, skiied for Boston College, had played in the U.X. Open at Jiminy Peak in 2000. "A good deal of skill is required, but luck also plays a major role. You could be the best golfer on the mountain, hit the best shots, and yet somehow lose because of a bad bounce off a chairlift pole...Only in the UX Open."

The U.X. Open is golf with Attitude … and Altitude! It leaves the manicured fairways, rigid dress codes, extensive rules and high costs at the country club. The U.X. Open offers golfers a whole new challenge … up, down, and across a 10-hole mountain course, with 10 simplified rules catering to the rocky terrain. Instead of putting, participants must pitch the ball onto a painted circle 20-30 feet in diameter; a four-club limit; less severe penalties for lost balls and unplayable lies; and no dress code … although hiking boots are strongly recommended. And you can forget about yardage markers and golf carts - laser rangefinder binoculars and ski lifts are preferred.

The 2003 U.X. Open Tour
