Extreme Conditions

MAMMOTH,
CA., AUG. 3, 2003 - While the rest of the field
was battling the extreme conditions of Mammoth Mountain
in the first U.X. Open qualifying event of 2003,
it would appear by the final scores that Greg Lippincott
and Ed Galvan were experiencing a nice leisurely
round of golf.
The duo ran away from the field by each shooting
a 33 (-2) on the challenging 10-hole course to defeat
their closest challengers -- 2002 U.X. Open Championship
qualifiers Dennis Hurlburt and Ric Moore -- by 10
shots. Lippincott, a 56 year-old CPA from Bishop,
CA., defeated Galvan, a 44-year-old golf pro at
De Bell Golf Club in Burbank in a chip-off to earn
the championship. Regardless, both players have
advanced to the 2003 U.X. Open Finals in
Aspen, CO. on September 21.
Despite the impressive scores it was not a walk
in the park for Lippincott and Galvan. "Last
year, in the UX Open at Mammoth I finished third
with a 43," explained Lippincott. "Having
course knowledge was a tremendous benefit as the
conditions are not for the 'country club' golfer
who has not adapted his or her game to challenging
blind shots, stances, lies and conditions. My Marine
Corps (1966-1970) training was valuable in negotiating
the hills."
The U.X. Open is golf with Attitude
and Altitude!
It leaves the manicured fairways, rigid dress codes,
extensive rules and high costs at the country club.
The U.X. Open offers golfers a whole new challenge
up, down, and across a 10-hole mountain course,
with 10 simplified rules catering to the rocky terrain.
Instead of putting, participants must pitch the
ball onto a painted circle 20-30 feet in diameter;
a four-club limit; less severe penalties for lost
balls and unplayable lies; and no dress code
although hiking boots are strongly recommended.
And you can forget about yardage markers and golf
carts - laser rangefinder binoculars and ski lifts
are preferred.
The 2003 U.X. Open Tour includes qualifying
events on: Aug. 2 -- Mammoth Mountain (Mammoth
Lakes, CA); Aug. 9 - Bromley Mountain (Manchester,
VT); Aug. 16 -- Wildcat Mountain (Jackson,
NH); Sep. 13 -- 49º North (Chewelah,
WA); Sept. 20 -- Snowmass Mountain (Aspen,
CO).
The 2003 U.X. Open Championship is scheduled
for Sept. 21, at Snowmass Mountain (Aspen, CO) featuring
the top two players from each qualifying event,
plus two-time defending champion Peter "Mongo"
Schory. In addition to Lippincott, Galvan and Schory,
other finalists include Bromley qualifiers Ben
Johnson (age 26, Clifton Park, NY) and Ernie
Salo (age 49, Bondville, VT); Wildcat qualifiers
Julie Rivers (Intervale, NH) and Steve
Woodward (Stow, VT). Rivers also qualified in
2002. The Championship will feature a unique survivor-style
shootout whereby one player is eliminated on each
hole until a champion is left. Two years in a row,
Schory won the title on a final hole closest-to-the-flag
chip-off.
Champions receive the Official U.X. Open crushed
red velour jacket; a crystal trophy and an invitation
to defend their championship the following year.
Past champions include:
1999 Kevin Cahill of Berwyn, PA;
2000; Jim Ryan of Rochester, NY;
2001 & 2002; Peter "Mongo"
Schory of Chewelah, WA.
Celebrating its fifth anniversary as the sports'
most adventurous round of golf, the U.X. Open has
been covered by Esquire, Men's Journal, USA Today,
Time, Newsweek, Los Angeles Times, Good Morning
America and hundreds of other international media
outlets. Many have likened the sport to becoming
to traditional golf what snowboarding is to downhill
skiing.
"Any golfer looking for a new challenge needs
to take on the rigors of U.X. Open golf. You'll
hit shots you never even imagined but we guarantee
you'll have a blast," said Rick Ryan Executive
Director of the U.X. Open.
