Julie Rivers Survives The Extreme Golf Conditions at WildCat Mountain To Return to the U.X. Open Championship

JACKSON, NH., AUG. 17, 2003 - Last year, Julie Rivers became the first woman to advance to the U.X. Open Championship. On Sept. 21, 2003, the golf pro at White Mountain Family Golf in Intervale, NH will join Keith Woodward of Stow, VT and eight other extreme golfers at Snowmass Mountain in Aspen, CO. for the opportunity to dethrone two-time defending U.X. Open Champion Peter "Mongo" Schory.

Woodward and Rivers earned their trip to the 2003 U.X. Open Championship by besting a competitive field of adventurous golfers at Wildcat Mountain on Aug. 16 in the 2003 U.X. Open. 15-year-old Kurt Schuler or Windham, NH and Paul Souza of Swanzea, MA. finished third and fourth respectively.

The U.X. Open is golf with Attitude … and Altitude! It leaves the manicured fairways, rigid dress codes, extensive rules and high costs at the country club. The U.X. Open offers golfers a whole new challenge … up, down, and across a 10-hole mountain course, with 10 simplified rules catering to the rocky terrain. Instead of putting, participants must pitch the ball onto a painted circle 20-30 feet in diameter; a four-club limit; less severe penalties for lost balls and unplayable lies; and no dress code … although hiking boots are strongly recommended. And you can forget about yardage markers and golf carts - laser rangefinder binoculars and ski lifts are preferred.

The 2003 U.X. Open Tour includes qualifying events on: Aug. 2 -- Mammoth Mountain (Mammoth Lakes, CA); Aug. 9 - Bromley Mountain (Manchester, VT); Aug. 16 -- Wildcat Mountain (Jackson, NH); Sep. 13 -- 49º North (Chewelah, WA); Sept. 20 -- Snowmass Mountain (Aspen, CO).

The 2003 U.X. Open Championship is scheduled for Sept. 21, at Snowmass Mountain (Aspen, CO) featuring the top two players from each qualifying event, plus two-time defending champion Peter "Mongo" Schory. In addition to Woodward, Rivers and Schory; the other finalists include: Bromely Mountain qualifiers Ben Johnson (age 26, Clifton Park, NY) and Ernie Salo (Bondville, VT); as well as Mammoth Mountain qualifiers Greg Lippincott (age 56, Bishop, CA) and Ed Galvan (Alhambra, CA). The Championship will feature a unique survivor-style shootout whereby one player is eliminated on each hole until a champion is left. Two years in a row, Schory won the title on a final hole closest-to-the-flag chip-off.

Champions receive the Official U.X. Open crushed red velour jacket; a crystal trophy and an invitation to defend their championship the following year. Past champions include:
1999 Kevin Cahill of Berwyn, PA;
2000; Jim Ryan of Rochester, NY;
2001 & 2002; Peter "Mongo" Schory of Chewelah, WA.

Celebrating its fifth anniversary as the sports' most adventurous round of golf, the U.X. Open has been covered by Esquire, Men's Journal, USA Today, Time, Newsweek, Los Angeles Times, Good Morning America and hundreds of other international media outlets. Many have likened the sport to becoming to traditional golf what snowboarding is to downhill skiing.

"Any golfer looking for a new challenge needs to take on the rigors of U.X. Open golf. You'll hit shots you never even imagined but we guarantee you'll have a blast," said Rick Ryan Executive Director of the U.X. Open.

The U.X. Open is owned and operated by UXGA Tour Properties, LLC. Fairfield, CT and sponsored by; GOLF magazine; SKIING magazine, JUST FOR MEN hair color and Top Flite.
